Within the past 48 hours, Cleveland, the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis-all avowed anti-big bonus clubs— and San Francisco have met price tags totaling an estimated $420,000 to sign live teenagers in major league baseball's annual rush on kid talent.

The Giants gave up about $170,000 for two of the kids yesterday. They signed Chuck (Cap) Peterson, a 17-year-old shortstop from Tacoma, Wash., for an estimated $90,000 a few hours after shelling out an estimated $80,000 for Randy Hundley, 18, a Martinsville, Va., catcher.

The Indians got into the sweepstakes yesterday by bundling up $175,000 to snare Sam McDowell, a 17-year-old left-hander who has pitched 40 no-hitters, in at bidding brawl with 13 other clubs. General Manager Frank Lane said the price was an all-time bonus high by the Indians, who paid $10,000 less to sign Herb Score nine years ago.

And Wednesday, the Cubs hit their high with an estimated $125,000 outlay for 17-year-old Danny Murphy, a right-handed pitcher from Danvers, Mass.

The Cardinals paid an estimated $50,000 the same day to Jerry Marx, M, a shortstop from Cincinnati. The Giants also recently paid an estimated $85,000 for Dick Dietz, 18, a catcher—making a total of $165,000 shelled out by the National League club for kid catchers in less than two weeks.
McDowell, 6-foot-5, son of former Pitt quarterback Tommy McDowell, was signed by Hoot Evers, Cleveland farm director, while a Yankee scout waited.
